I saw the Old 97s again last Thursday as a new venue, Union Transfer. I was concerned that they were downgrading to a smaller place but I was pleasantly surprised at the size and the general atmosphere. There were easily 1500 people there and unlike the other venues in Philly they didn't charge extortionate prices for food and drinks. As is current vogue with acts who have been around awhile, they played an older album from start to finish. They did Too Far to care from 1997 which contains one of my favorite songs, Big Brown Eyes and a number of great sing along ones too like Barrier Reef, Time Bomb and Four Leaf Clover. There were no seats so we stood about 30 feet from the stage. I was a little annoyed when a couple stood in front of me, the guy encroaching on my personal space with his bald head and slight body odor. I figured that I would drive him away by singing along very loudly in his ear and whooping in a high pitched way after each song. It worked about halfway through the show. (Talk about passive aggression. LQTM.) After Too Far, they played another set of their crowd favorites. (I can't call them hits as they have never come close to having one.) Rhett opened by playing 5 songs, four from his solos, a Wilco Billy Bragg song and The Wreck of the Old 97, whence they got their name.
